![]() I very much enjoyed reading about these women. She relies on letters, diaries, news articles, and published material from the time period and cites all sources. Many women took over the running households and properties, and some descended into poverty and starvation. They transcended their traditional roles – which were severely restrictive from a modern standpoint. She articulates the fears and challenges these women faced. ![]() She reserves separate chapters for informative stories of tribal and enslaved women. She looks at the Revolution from the viewpoints of English, American, and even Hessian women. The book is well-organized into groups involved in the war, such as active participants, camp followers, generals’ wives, spies, and exiled women. She looks at their contributions through the lens of allegiance, class, and origin. Carol Berkin examines the roles women played in the American Revolutionary War. ![]() ![]() While Jones’s previous works primarily focus on younger protagonists, all four books closely dissect the intricacies of family life. Like An American Marriage, Jones’ third novel, Silver Sparrow (2011) focuses on leading a double life as it explores what happens when the daughters of a man with both a public family and a secret family meet and become friends. Her second novel, The Untelling (2005), is also set in Atlanta and tells the story of a character forced to redefine herself in her mid-twenties while reflecting on the members of her family she lost as a child. Jones’ 2002 debut novel Leaving Atlanta is a coming of age story set during the Atlanta Child Murders of 1979-1981, and, like An American Marriage, takes place in the titular city. ![]() ![]() ![]() Not all writers live in this cauldron, though we all have our peeves. The instructions are not wrong, but the intellectual underpinnings are feeble. It is uninstructive in a book which introduces itself as “Some Instructions on Writing and Life.” Though I laughed out loud many times, it was as if I were reading two books – laughing at the funny one but unenlightened by the “instructions on writing and life” one. Choosing sheep lice instead of, say, cockroaches or oxen is amusing, but humor should be organic and this imaginary comparison is tacked on without any meaning in this context. : “The very first thing I tell my new students…is that good writing is about telling the truth…Sheep lice do not seem to share this longing, which is one reason they write so very little.” Funny. The book is filled with one-liners reminiscent of standup shtick. Yet I am a writer, and the three fires do not burn so wantonly in me, so in the end, I read it as a story. It is the naked devotion that connects so strongly that it is hard to reject her. Anne Lamott’s book Bird by Bird is a cauldron of humanity standing on three legs: humor, passionate devotion to writing, and despair. ![]() ![]() ![]() And that's can get a little annoying if you are not into it. ![]() While I'm at this point, the story gets a lot of ice fishing details. Lucy must stay safe, and protect his puppy, because someone or something is roaming the corridors of the castle late at night. This odd, extravagant tale reads like PG Wodehouse setting Alice Through the Looking Glass at an outpost of Fawlty Towers Hotel in 19th-century Austria: and if you think that sounds pleasingly. Thus begins a tale of polite theft, bitter heartbreak, domestic mystery and cold-blooded murder in which every aspect of human behaviour is laid bare for our hero to observe.
